Breakfast and Smoothies

IMG_1080

Breakfast is sacred to me, it’s the most important meal after all. My day heavily depends on how i am fed in the morning. Being a typical Filipino household, it was always Champorado or Pandesal or Fried rice but ever since we started to closely watch what we eat, i introduced a fruit-based and high protein/fiber diet as we jump start our days for work and school, or house (for Mom, in her endless “business” quest). Ergo, enter this healthy, easy-to-prepare, and nutritious fruit smoothies.

I find it actually a win-win situation that we have Smoothies as a morning supplement because it is Summer and Summer in the Philippines can be too unbearable as temp can go as high as 40+ degrees. Also, drinking liquids for breakfast is much easier to digest than a full-plate American/English-breakfast style but equally nutritious and energy-filled.

Here are two smoothie recipes we frequently prepare at home. My Mom’s pretty much the main beneficiary in this conquest haha but i gladly serve her as she needs it for her Sugar watch.

Smoothie #1 : Blueberry Smoothie

Preparation Time: 5 mins

Ingredients:

1/4 cup Blueberry
2 tbsp Mango
5 slices Cucumber
10 pcs Almonds
1/2 cup Skimmed Milk
Water (as needed)

Note: Mango and Almonds are not organic produce. It’s hard to find organic ones here 😦

Procedure: Slice and freeze the fruits overnight. Blend all ingredients all together in the morning. Add water as needed to smoothen the texture. Serve and drink immediately.

Tip: This is a high-protein drink with Almonds and Bluebrries combined. Almonds have high mono-unsaturated fats, the same type of health-promoting fats found in olive oil, which have been associated with reduced risk of heart disease. While Blueberry has high anti-oxidant compounds which can improve memory.

Smoothie #2: Banana Apple Smoothie

Preparation Time: 5 mins

Ingredients:

2 pcs Banana
1/4 cup Apple
1/2 cup Almond Milk
2 tsp Flax seeds meal
Water (as needed)

Note: Flax seeds meal and Almond milk are organic. You can get them at any Healthy Options outlet nationwide.

Procedure: Slice and freeze the fruits overnight. Blend all ingredients all together in the morning. Add water as needed to smoothen the texture. Serve and drink immediately.

Tip: Better if Bananas you will use are way past its ripe stage or in Tagalog “malapit na mabulok”. Its taste is much more flavorful too 🙂

Bee-tee-davs, adding Flax seeds meal in any of your drinks are highly advisable. Why you may ask? Some claim Flax seeds to be one of the most powerful plant food in the planet for it has high omega-3 fatty acid, it has lignans or fiber-like compounds that provide antioxidant protection, and it has Mucilage (refers to water-soluble, gel-forming fiber that can provide special support to the intestinal tract). Also, Flax seeds may reduce risks of certain cancers, cardiovascular disease, and lung disease.

About time to rethink your breakfast!

Smooth and Sweet,

Charlene
